Imagine if our MP, local councillors, borough leaders and developers recognised the once-in-a-generation opportunity sitting on our doorstep—and worked together to create a destination that complements the arrival of the Universal theme park rather than simply existing beside it.
A place that welcomes visitors from across the UK while remaining rooted in the needs and identity of the local community.
A thriving town centre filled not with generic chain stores, but with Bedfordshire’s best independent shops, artisan makers, cafés, restaurants, markets and locally produced food and drink.
A vibrant, sustainable destination that creates jobs, supports local businesses, brings long-term financial resilience to the town, and gives residents the facilities and quality of life they were originally promised.
Not a copy of Universal—but its perfect counterpart: authentic, local, green, welcoming and uniquely Wixams.
The Bottom Line
The reality is that very little of this vision is currently planned.
After years of scaled-back commitments, reduced facilities, released land and a growing sense that “what’s done is done,” Wixams risks falling permanently short of what it could become.
The town centre currently promised is nowhere near ambitious enough to meet the opportunity now emerging around it, but this future is not impossible.
If residents, councillors, developers, local businesses and decision-makers choose to think bigger, act boldly and revisit the long-term vision for Wixams, then one day this could become a thriving destination that benefits everyone — creating jobs, supporting local enterprise, attracting visitors and finally delivering the vibrant, sustainable community that was promised from the very beginning.
